Laphroaig 10 Yr. Old & Select Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskies
The distillery at Laphroaig (the beautiful hollow by a broad bay) on the South Coast of Islay was established in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston. Donald ran the distillery but died in 1847 after falling into a vat of boiling pot ale. However, the distillery remained in the control of D. Johnston & Co. The Suntory family business founded 1899 in Osaka, Japan, is now the parent company.
Laphroaig 10yr. Old Whisky is presented at 40% Vol. in boxed 70cl. bottle. The edition has a really smoky flavour with seaweed and intense peat background, with a hint of sweetness. It is matured in ex-bourbon casks which intensifies the peaty flavours. This whisky is ideal for drinking straight, with drops of water, on the rocks, and as a club soda or ginger.
Laphroaig Select edition whisky comprises spirit selected by the master distiller from Oloroso Sherry Butts, Pedro Ximinez seasoned Hogsheads, first-fill Bourbon Quarter Casks, European Triple Wood Oak casks, and finally spends six months in new American Oak casks located in the highest, warmest areas of the warehouses over Scottish summers. This floor-malted barley, non-chill whisky has an outstanding smoky flavour, followed by hints of seaweed and sweetness with additional layers of complexity and depth arising from the fusion of maturation styles and different oaks. The palate holds up well to addition of a couple of pipette drops of water.
